Boy I remember this thing. I hated its guts whenever I spelled something incorrectly. “WRONG! try again….” felt like the thing was talking down to me. And don’t get me started on its off sounding voice. Stupid thing would ask me to spell ‘SWAP’ and I always heard it as ‘SWAMP’.

That thing is the f**cking bomb! So funny how they use that childrens’ toy (I used to play with it when I was a kid and LOVED it).

Here it is in action for us same generation 25 years later or greater:

I do recall getting this christmas of 87. I was a 7 year old skinny boy and everything was exciting to me

I had one of these and the math one too. The Speak & Spell had this feature where it would decode letters. Like it had some secret language you can type in, press the button, and it would spell out the real word. I used to type in “FNN” and then press whatever button so it would spell “ASS.” As a little kid, that entertained me!

I used to have all three of those units when I was about 6 or 7 years-old. With Speak & Spell, I mostly played it with the “Noun Endings” module.

When I was a wee child, I asked for a Speak and Spell and I was given a Speak and Math. Consequently, this disappointing moment in time began my hate/hate relationship with mathematics. I can still hear that creepy computerized voice admonishing me. “That is incorrect, the correct answer is…”
